As mothers yourselves, how did your personal parenting experiences shape the foundation of The Toy Trunk?
In a world with increasing screen addiction, flashy plastic toys, and a lack of ability to focus, imagine, and explore independently — two mothers decided to ask a difficult question: Are today’s toys helping children grow… or simply keeping them distracted? That question became the beginning of The Toy Trunk — a conscious toy brand built on the belief that children don’t need to be entertained. They need better environments to learn, create, and think freely.
“When children are given the right toys at the right stage, learning unfolds naturally — without pressure, screens, or constant instruction.”
As mothers, the founders observed this fact many modern parenting systems overlook. They are born ready to learn. Excessive screen exposure, battery-operated toys, and overstimulating environments are slowly replacing imagination with passive consumption. That realization shaped the foundation of The Toy Trunk. Instead of designing toys that dictate play, The Toy Trunk creates Montessori-inspired wooden toys, open-ended learning toys, and non-toxic educational toys that encourage independent thinking, sensory exploration, creativity, and problem-solving.
What problem in modern parenting were you trying to solve through The Toy Trunk?
Modern parenting often comes with guilt, exhaustion, and the constant pressure to “teach” children everything early. At the same time, children today are spending more hours on screens than ever before, impacting attention span, creativity, emotional regulation, and real-world learning experiences.
The founders of The Toy Trunk saw a dangerous pattern:
- Toys becoming louder, brighter, and more addictive
- Children becoming passive observers instead of active learners
- Parents confusing entertainment with development
- Traditional, meaningful play disappearing from homes
The Toy Trunk was created to offer an alternative:
screen-free learning through purposeful play.
Toy Trunk toys are designed to support:
- Cognitive development
- Fine motor skills
- Sensory learning
- Independent play
- Creativity and problem-solving
Your journey connects child development with India’s dying craft forms—how did these two worlds come together into one business idea?
The journey of The Toy Trunk began at the intersection of two urgent realities:
- Children were losing access to meaningful, development-focused play
- India’s traditional toy-making artisans were losing their livelihoods
The founders realized that India already possessed generations of wisdom in creating natural, handcrafted, child-safe toys using sustainable materials. So they built a bridge between modern child development and traditional craftsmanship.
“Machines can replicate, but only human hands can create something truly unique and meaningful. That’s the beauty of handmade.”
What was the biggest gap you noticed in the toy industry that made you believe The Toy Trunk needed to exist?
After recognizing the importance of meaningful play in early childhood, we found it surprisingly difficult to source age-appropriate, non-toxic toys for our own children. Instead, the market was dominated by plastic toys that offered limited developmental value and often encouraged passive engagement rather than active learning.
At the same time, we were deeply aware of India’s rich heritage of traditional toy-making, where skilled artisans have long created safe, natural, and thoughtfully crafted toys for children.
How do you decide whether a toy is truly helping a child learn instead of simply keeping them busy?
For us, a toy is meaningful only if it engages the child actively, not passively. We ask—does it make the child think, explore, solve, or create? We consciously design our toys to be open-ended, meaning they can be played with in multiple ways based on a child’s imagination. This allows the toy to evolve with the child rather than limit how it should be used.If a toy encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity, and aligns with developmental milestones, we know it is truly supporting learning—not just keeping a child busy.

Many brands focus on bright plastic toys and instant entertainment—why did you choose the slower, more mindful path of wooden and Montessori-inspired toys?
Most modern toys are designed for instant stimulation — flashing lights, repetitive sounds, and short attention spans. But research and lived parenting experiences showed the founders something alarming:
Overstimulating toys often reduce imagination instead of enhancing it.
That’s why The Toy Trunk chose the slower, more mindful path of:
- Wooden toys
- Montessori-inspired learning
- Open-ended play
- Sustainable materials
- Minimalist design
Was there ever a moment during the early stages when you doubted whether this idea would work? How did you push through it?
In the beginning, we often questioned whether parents would look beyond cheaper, plastic, mass-produced toys and choose something more thoughtful. Our toys are handmade, durable, safe and non-toxic, and offer meaningful play, not quick consumption. As parents, we experienced firsthand the lack of developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant toys, and that conviction kept us going. Early feedback from families confirmed what we believed—when a toy truly supports a child’s growth, the value goes far beyond its price.
Today, more parents are actively searching for:
- eco-friendly toys
- safe toys for babies
- plastic-free toys
- toys for brain development

What is your long-term vision for The Toy Trunk and the future of conscious parenting in India?
The Toy Trunk aims to lead this growing movement in India.
It is about helping raise:
- more curious children
- more creative thinkers
- more mindful families
- and a generation less dependent on screens
