Ladakh changed the way I understood water. Despite being surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and snow, many communities face severe water shortages when they need it most. Living and working in the region helped me realise that water availability and accessibility are two very different things.

I was particularly struck by the mismatch between the natural water cycle and the agricultural cycle. While much of Ladakh’s water arrives as snow and ice during winter and spring, farmers need a reliable supply later in the year, especially during the growing season. Climate change is making this challenge more difficult by affecting snowfall, glacier behaviour, and the timing of meltwater.

Our early work involved experimenting with ways to capture, freeze, and store water that would be technically feasible, affordable, and suitable for remote Himalayan communities. We soon realised that the solution had to go beyond a technological demonstration. It needed to fit into the community’s existing water system, taking into account local terrain, temperatures, construction, maintenance, and seasonal needs.

These early experiments shaped our understanding of artificial ice reservoirs. We began viewing ice not simply as an end product, but as a way to store water seasonally and make it available when communities need it most. This principle continues to guide how we design and deploy our solutions.

Solutions & Core Innovation

At Acres of Ice, our core innovation lies in combining traditional water-management knowledge with modern technologies such as IoT, automation, and data-driven systems. We aim to strengthen practices developed over generations, making water management more efficient, reliable, and scalable for communities in high-altitude regions.

Our key solutions include Automated Ice Reservoirs (AIR), Automated Irrigation Systems (AIS), and Smart Siphoning Systems (SSS), each addressing a different stage of water management.

Automated Ice Reservoirs (AIR) are designed to capture and store water as ice during winter, making it available during the critical agricultural season. Automated Irrigation Systems (AIS) help farmers manage irrigation schedules and control water flow, reducing water wastage and the need for constant manual intervention. Meanwhile, Smart Siphoning Systems (SSS) combine siphoning techniques with monitoring and automation to support the controlled management of water levels in glacial lakes, potentially helping reduce risks associated with excessive water accumulation.

Together, these solutions aim to improve how water is stored, distributed, and managed, helping communities respond more effectively to seasonal water shortages and the challenges of changing climatic conditions.

Impact & Applications

At Acres of Ice, we measure our impact through both the water resources we help conserve and the communities we support. So far, we have helped save and store approximately 51 million litres of water in the form of ice and established 15 Automated Ice Reservoirs (AIRs) across 15 villages, helping communities access water during periods of scarcity.

We have also supported the formation of 18 village water committees that encourage community participation in water management. These committees help assess local water requirements, manage available resources, and ensure distribution according to the needs of each village.

Our Automated Irrigation Systems (AIS) have contributed to approximately 20% water savings and an increase of around 20% in agricultural yield. These results highlight how efficient water management can help farmers conserve resources while improving productivity.

Through these initiatives, we aim to strengthen village-level water security, support agricultural productivity, and help Himalayan communities become more resilient to seasonal water shortages.

Journey & Evolution

Acres of Ice began with a two-member team, a simple idea, and a strong belief that we could address the water challenges faced by communities in the Himalayan region.

As we started putting our ideas into practice, the organization gradually grew in terms of team, projects, partnerships, and impact. Each project brought new learnings from the communities we worked with, helping us refine our solutions, test new approaches, and transform our initial concept into practical, technology-driven water-management systems.

Today, Acres of Ice has expanded from a small two-member team into an organization working across multiple countries, developing solutions such as Automated Ice Reservoirs (AIR), Automated Irrigation Systems (AIS), and Smart Siphoning Systems (SSS).

Our journey has been shaped by continuous experimentation, community engagement, and the effort to measure results and scale what works. As we continue to evolve, every new project presents an opportunity to improve our solutions and create a greater impact on water security and the communities we serve.

Vision & Future Goals

Our vision is to build a future where mountain communities do not just survive with the limited resources they have, but are able to thrive because of how efficiently they manage and use those resources.
We want to help villages become more water-secure, climate-resilient, and self-reliant by combining traditional knowledge with modern technology. Our goal is to develop solutions that enable communities to better store, manage, distribute, and conserve water, while also supporting agriculture and local livelihoods.
