Overview

Kesakambali Foundation (founded in November 2023 by Rahul Gupta) is India’s pioneer bio-based environmental enterprise that repurposes salon hair waste into advanced ecological solutions. Human hair is naturally rich in keratin, contains 16.5% nitrogen, and can absorb 5-6 times its weight in oil (a phenomenon backed by NASA research). Instead of letting thousands of tons of hair choke landfills, Kesakambali intercepts this bio-waste at the root. Backed by global pioneers like Matter of Trust (USA) and validated through third-party testing by Vardan Envirolab LLP, this student-impacted initiative bridges the gap between urban waste management, water purification, and soil regeneration.

The foundation drives a strict waste-to-resource model through two distinct operational arms:

The Zero Waste GreenSalon Programme: A structured, tiered collection network (Free Partner vs. Certified GreenSalon Partner) that trains and incentivizes salons—including premium brands like Truefitt & Hill India—to responsibly segregate and dispatch hair waste.

HydroHair Barrier System (HBS): An innovative floating filtration mechanism embedded with specialized hair-textile mats. When deployed in urban drains, it traps macro-plastics while dynamically absorbing oil, grease, and industrial chemical contaminants.

Agromat Mulch Discs: Bio-fabricated mats designed for agriculture and horticulture. Placed around plants, they act as micro-moisture locks and slow-release nitrogen fertilizers.

Benefits

Water Remediation & Pollution Control: In institutional pilots with the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the HBS system successfully reduced severe aquatic pollutants, heavily dropping levels of BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), COD, TSS (Total Suspended Solids), and fecal coliform in open urban drains.

Agricultural Water Conservation: The Agromat discs optimize farming efficiency by cutting down plant irrigation and watering requirements by up to 50%, preventing soil moisture evaporation.

Natural Soil Enrichment: Unlike chemical fertilizers, the hair-mats degrade slowly, offering a steady, long-term supply of organic nitrogen directly to the roots, improving overall soil fertility.

Landfill Diversion & Awareness: It effectively halts a massive category of slow-degrading bio-waste from entering city dumping grounds while simultaneously educating over 21,000 students on circular economics.

Future Goals

National Grid Expansion: Inspired by international models like Sungai Watch, the ultimate goal is to establish a standardized, nationwide hair-collection infrastructure connecting local barbers, premium salons, municipal corporations, and NGOs into one pipeline.

Academic Validation: Deepening agricultural research through ongoing extensive field trials with Kerala Agricultural University to study impact across diverse soil varieties.

Industrial Scale-Up: Over the next 5 to 10 years, Kesakambali aims to become India’s absolute benchmark for bio-waste valorization, deploying the HydroHair Barrier Systems across major industrial discharge points and critical polluted river tributaries nationwide.
